About Central Rhodope Biosphere Reserve

The Central Rhodope Biosphere Reserve is located in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria, covering an area renowned for its rich biodiversity and complex ecosystems. Declared a biosphere reserve in 1987 under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, it spans over 36,000 hectares composed of mixed forests, alpine meadows, deep river valleys, and karst formations. The region serves as a crucial habitat for many rare and endemic species such as the Balkan chamois, gray wolf, brown bear, and over 200 bird species, including the elusive Eastern Imperial Eagle. Its forest composition is dominated by European beech, Norway spruce, and Scots pine, along with unique relic plants tracing back to the Tertiary period. The area also holds significant archaeological and cultural landmarks, including ancient Thracian sanctuaries and medieval fortresses. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore numerous trails suited for hiking and mountain biking, offering immersion into pristine nature and panoramic mountain views. The biosphere’s rivers and streams support trout fishing, while its relatively remote and unspoiled terrain appeals to wildlife photographers and nature watchers. The reserve is managed to balance environmental protection with sustainable human activities, ensuring preservation of its natural and cultural heritage. Visitors find tranquility in this wild mountain setting, supported by a network of marked trails and eco-education centers that promote conservation awareness.
